The First-Time Quilter's Shopping List: Everything You Need to Get Started

Starting your first quilt is one of the most exciting creative decisions you can make — and one of the most overwhelming. Between fabric choices, tools, and techniques, it's easy to feel like you need a degree just to begin. The good news? You don't. You just need the right supplies and a little guidance. Here's everything a first-time quilter needs to get started.

Fabric: The Fun Part

Quilting cotton is the best fabric for beginners. It's easy to cut, holds its shape well, and presses beautifully. The trickiest part for most new quilters isn't the sewing — it's choosing fabrics that work together. That's where bundles come in.

Fat quarter bundles are pre-coordinated collections of fabric cuts, usually 18" x 22" each, designed by the same designer to work together perfectly. No colour-matching stress, no guesswork — just open the bundle and start cutting. They're the single best purchase a beginner quilter can make.

If you want even less cutting, precuts like charm packs (5" squares) and jelly rolls (2.5" strips) are already cut to size and ready to sew.

Cutting Tools: The Essential Trio

Scissors won't cut it for quilting (pun intended). You'll need:

  • Rotary cutter — a circular blade that glides through multiple layers of fabric at once. A 45mm cutter is the most versatile size to start with.
  • Self-healing cutting mat — protects your table and keeps your fabric from slipping. An 18" x 24" mat is a great starter size.
  • Quilting ruler — a clear acrylic ruler with precise markings. A 6" x 24" ruler handles most beginner cuts.

These three tools work together and make accurate cutting much easier than scissors alone.

Sewing Essentials

You don't need a fancy machine to quilt — any sewing machine with a straight stitch will do. A ¼" presser foot is a worthwhile addition since quilting relies on consistent ¼" seam allowances.

Beyond your machine, stock up on:

  • 100% cotton quilting thread in a neutral colour (grey or cream works with almost everything)
  • Quilting pins or wonder clips to hold pieces together
  • A seam ripper — every quilter's best friend, no matter how experienced

Pressing & Finishing

Pressing seams as you go is one of the secrets to a flat, professional-looking quilt. A good iron and a pressing mat or pad are essential. Don't skip this step!

When your quilt top is finished, you'll need:

  • Batting — the fluffy middle layer that gives your quilt warmth and loft. Cotton batting is easiest for beginners to work with.
  • Backing fabric — a piece of fabric for the back of your quilt. For larger quilts, wide backing fabrics (108" wide) eliminate the need to piece your backing together, which saves time and effort.

Your First Pattern

Start simple. A 9-patch, rail fence, or half-square triangle quilt are all classic beginner projects that teach you the fundamentals without overwhelming you. Browse our collection of quilt patterns to find something that excites you — because when you love the pattern, you'll actually finish it.
