How to Get Your SEWJO Back (When You're in a Creative Slump)
Share
We've all been there. The fabric is stacked, the patterns are pinned, and yet… nothing. You sit down at your machine and just stare. Your SEWJO has officially left the building.
The good news? It always comes back. Here's what works for us (and for so many quilters in our community) when the creative well runs dry.
1. Give yourself permission to do nothing
Sometimes the slump is the rest. Step away from the sewing room for a few days without guilt. Creative energy needs time to refill.
2. Start something tiny
Don't tackle the king-size quilt when you're feeling stuck. Grab a fat quarter, make a mug rug, or sew a zipper pouch. Finishing something small — anything — gets the momentum going again.
3. Go fabric shopping (obviously 😄)
New fabric is basically creative CPR. Even browsing online and adding things to your wishlist can spark ideas. (We may be biased, but we stand by this one.)
4. Look at what you've already made
Pull out a finished quilt. Remind yourself that you can do this — because you already have, many times over.
5. Find your people
Join a quilt-along, pop into a local guild meeting, or scroll through your favourite quilting hashtags. Seeing what others are making is contagious in the best way.
6. Change your environment
Sew somewhere different — the kitchen table, the backyard, a friend's house. A new setting can shake loose the creative cobwebs.
7. Go back to a favourite
Revisit a pattern you've loved before, or pull fabrics for a colourway that makes you happy. Comfort quilting is a real thing and it works.
