How Many Quilts Is Too Many? (Asking for a Friend)

We need to talk.

Not about your stash. We've already agreed not to discuss the stash. This is about the quilts.

Specifically: how many is too many?

We've been doing some research. (By "research" we mean asking ourselves this question at 11pm while starting a new project.) And we've come to a very scientific conclusion.

There is no such thing as too many quilts.

Allow us to present the evidence.

Every bed needs one. Possibly three.

A quilt for sleeping. A quilt for display. A quilt for when company comes and you want them to know you're serious about this hobby. That's already three per bed. Do the math.

Every couch needs at least two.

One for the left side. One for the right. What if two people want to be cozy at the same time? You didn't think of that, did you.

Gifts are a legitimate quilting category.

Babies are born. People get married. Friends move into new homes. You are basically running a one-person gifting operation and the inventory requirements are significant.

The ones you're not happy with don't count.

The points didn't match. The colours went a bit sideways. Those are learning quilts. They live in a separate pile and are not included in the official total.

Some quilts are just for looking at.

Folded on a ladder. Draped over a chair. Hung on a wall. These are decorative quilts and they serve an important aesthetic function. They are not for using. They are for admiring.

So the next time someone asks how many quilts you have, the answer is simple: enough for now, but I'm working on it. 🧵
