It's not that your favourite shop is disorganized or didn't order enough. It's simply how the quilting fabric industry works. Understanding the process can help you shop smarter, plan better, and never miss a collection you love again.

Fabric Collections Are Designed Seasons in Advance

When you see a new fabric collection arrive in a shop, that collection was likely designed 12 to 18 months earlier. Fabric designers work far ahead of the market — creating colourways, developing prints, and working with manufacturers to bring their vision to life long before a single yard reaches a shop floor.

By the time a collection is available to purchase, the designer has already moved on to their next project. The creative process never stops — which is part of what makes the fabric world so exciting and ever-changing.

Shops Order Months Before You See It

Here's where it gets interesting for shop owners. We don't simply order fabric when we need it. We place our orders months in advance — often before the fabric is even printed — based on preview images, swatches, and our knowledge of what our community loves.

This is called ordering on pre-order or pre-booking. Shops commit to their quantities early, the manufacturer prints and ships the fabric, and then it arrives at the shop — sometimes many months after the order was placed.

What this means for you: when a new collection arrives in our shop, we've been anticipating it for a long time. And the quantities we have are the quantities we have — there's no calling the warehouse for more.

Fabric Collections Are One and Done

This is the part that surprises many new quilters: most fabric collections are printed once and never reprinted.

Once a manufacturer's print run is sold through — to shops around the world — that's it. The fabric is gone. There's no reorder. There's no "back in stock next month." When it's sold out, it's sold out everywhere, not just with us.

Occasionally a collection is so wildly popular that a manufacturer will do a second print run, but this is the exception, not the rule. And even then, subtle differences in dye lots can mean the reprint looks slightly different from the original.

Why This Matters for Your Quilting Projects

Understanding this helps you make smarter decisions when you find a collection you love:

• Buy enough the first time. If a pattern calls for 2 yards of a background fabric and you love it, consider buying 2.5 or 3. Running out mid-project and being unable to find more is a frustrating experience.
• Don't wait too long. If a collection speaks to you, trust that feeling. Waiting a few weeks to decide can mean missing out entirely — especially on popular bundles and kits.
• Pre-orders are your friend. When we announce an upcoming collection, pre-ordering guarantees your piece of it before it even arrives. It's the best way to make sure you don't miss something you love.
• Stash with intention. Buying a little extra of a fabric you love isn't being indulgent — it's being practical. Future you will be very grateful.
