Did you know that June 13th is National Sewing Machine Day? ๐งต
That's right โ there is an entire day dedicated to celebrating the invention that changed the world of textiles, fashion, and quilting forever. We think it deserves a little more fanfare than it gets, so today we're sharing some of our favourite fun facts about the humble, mighty sewing machine.
Fun Facts About the Sewing Machine
- ๐งต It's older than you think. The first patented sewing machine was invented by Elias Howe in 1846 โ that's nearly 180 years ago! Isaac Singer later improved the design and turned it into a household name.
- โ๏ธ It was controversial at first. When sewing machines were introduced, tailors and seamstresses rioted in the streets of France, fearing the machines would take their jobs. Sound familiar? Some things never change.
- โก It sped things up dramatically. Before the sewing machine, sewing a men's dress shirt by hand took about 14 hours. A sewing machine could do it in about an hour. Quilters everywhere rejoiced.
- ๐ Singer made it a household staple. By the 1880s, Singer was selling over 500,000 machines a year worldwide. They also pioneered the instalment payment plan โ so you could say sewing machines invented buying things on credit.
- ๐งต The lockstitch is the secret. Most modern sewing machines use a lockstitch โ two threads that interlock through the fabric. It's the same basic mechanism Elias Howe patented in 1846. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
- ๐ There are millions of them. It's estimated that there are tens of millions of sewing machines in use around the world today โ from industrial factories to cozy sewing rooms just like yours.
- ๐ป Modern machines are basically computers. Today's computerized sewing machines can store hundreds of stitch patterns, embroider intricate designs, and even connect to the internet. Elias Howe would be absolutely gob smacked.
- ๐ฉน They changed women's lives. The sewing machine gave women the ability to earn income from home and dramatically reduced the time spent on household sewing โ freeing up hours for, well, more quilting.
How to Celebrate National Sewing Machine Day
We think the best way to honor this day is simple: sit down at your machine and sew something. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece. A few blocks, a seam or two, a project you've been putting off โ just let that needle fly.
If your machine has been sitting idle, today is the perfect excuse to dust it off, oil it up, and remind yourself why you fell in love with quilting in the first place.
And if you need a little project inspiration, our precut collection is full of bundles that are ready to sew โ no excuses needed. ๐
Happy National Sewing Machine Day from all of us at Sew Obsessed. May your tension be perfect and your bobbins always full. ๐งตโ๏ธ
